Nigerian underwear bomber seeks new adviser
31 Dec 2011 at 20:26hrs | Views
A Nigerian man who pleaded guilty to trying to blow up a Detroit-bound airliner with a bomb in his underwear wants a new legal adviser, preferably an attorney who is Muslim.
Umar Farouk Abdulmutallab is asking a judge to dismiss his standby counsel, Anthony Chambers. He says their relationship is strained.
Abdulmutallab has been acting as his own lawyer, but Chambers was appointed to assist him. Abdulmutallab pleaded guilty in October to attempting to bring down an Amsterdam-to-Detroit flight on Christmas 2009.
He faces a life sentence on January 19.
Chambers tells The Detroit News that Abdulmutallab is a "misguided young man with a distorted sense of reality." He denies misleading him. A court hearing is set for January 6.
