Mopane Foundation International Field-trip 2017
30 May 2017 at 20:52hrs | Views
The Mopane Foundation International team, a UK based charity organisation that supports underprivileged school-going age orphaned children in rural schools in Zimbabwe is embarking on yet another exploratory and eye-opening annual field-trip visiting the 35 children under the sponsorship of the charity in 3 provinces.
The organisation which doesn't have any paid staff yet sorely depends on public donations to afford these kids school fees, uniforms or any school necessities. The charity supports these children who most live with ailing grandparents or other relatives and a few who are living in a child-headed family.
We caught up with Nomsa Neke who is the organisation's project leader and leading the team on this current trip and asked about the initiative as well as the trip.
She says the organisation's approach is not to just pay fees and leave kids alone but to find time at some point and spend time with them. Each school had been allocated a day hence the 6 days. In that day, other than checking on their books on how there are doing they plan to spend time with kids off class and try to know them as children they are.
"We aim to look at the holistic view of each child maybe we would find a better way of supporting them. I am one who can admit that most of their results are not that good but how can we expect much out of them? I have spoken to them and I have head the saddest stories of their lives. There is a world out there with these kids and nobody seems to know about, I personally think its about time their seldomly heard sad stories come to light".
Ms Neke say the team starts in Tsholotsho, Nkayi, Shurugwi, Matobo then finish with 2 schools in Kezi. Asked why she is doing it, she says "I am a village child, I know what a world with extremely limited opportunities is and these are worse because they don't have parents to advocate for them. I volunteer my services to be maybe something close to their mouthpiece and help them access life opportunities".
The team says their trip starts on Friday the 2nd June, follow them on Facebook Mopane Foundation International and keep supporting through the charity account
