New Delhi - Police say a school bus plunged into a river and at least seven people were killed in the west-coast Indian resort state of Goa.

Police divers and rescuers are searching the waters for another eight people still missing.

The bus went into the Kalvi River on Saturday morning about 30km from Goa's capital of Panaji.

Police say the driver lost control and jumped along with the bus conductor from the vehicle. Both were unhurt.

Police director general Kishan Kumar says rescuers pulled the bus from the water and recovered the bodies of six children and one adult.

Military helicopters and residents with canoes were helping the search and rescue effort.

Goa's government offered 200 000 rupees ($4 000) in compensation to victims' families.
