Mnangagwa honoured in Guinea

Guinea President Alpha Conde has awarded President Emmerson Mnangagwa with the Grand Cross Award which symbolises everlasting friendship and solidarity between the peoples of the two countries.

Guinea's highest national medal of honour was bestowed upon President Mnangagwa on Tuesday evening at a state banquet hosted in his honour by his Guinea counterpart.

The government of Guinea Conakry honoured President Mnangagwa with the Grand Cross Award in appreciation of his visit, which is the first ever by a sitting Zimbabwean head of state and in recognition of  the new impetus that the visit has added to the relationship between the two countries.

Receiving the award, President Mnangagwa whose foreign policy is anchored on engagement and re-engagement, said the friendship must translate into meaningful economic cooperation for the benefit of the peoples of the two countries.

"lt is indeed a great honour to receive the Grand Cross Award on this occasion of my visit to the historic Pan African country of the Republic of Guinea. I receive this esteemed award on behalf of Government and the Republic of Zimbabwe and indeed on my own behalf with great humility and pride. The Grand Cross Award is a symbol of everlasting friendship and solidarity that exists between our two countries which predates our independence.

"I am confident that the friendship and fraternal relationship will translate into strong economic ties through our bilateral relations as well as the various frameworks within the African Union and the United Nations," said President Mnangagwa.

President Mnangagwa said the values espoused by Africa's founding fathers of unity, peace and development for the whole continent must propel us further.

"Your Excellency Cde President, this decoration Grand Cross Award is indeed a momentous occasion in the relations of our two countries and of great value to me personally. May we continue in this spirit of brotherliness and togetherness as we journey towards uplifting the quality of life of our people and the economic prosperity of our two countries," he added.

The two-day State visit was essentially a diplomatic and political visit and President Mnangagwa took the occasion to consolidate Africa's support to rally behind Zimbabwe on its anti-sanctions drive.
