Zimbabwean President Emmerson Mnangagwa has congratulated Boris Johnson after he was elected as leader of the Conservative Party and Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.
Johnson, a former Mayor of London and British Foreign Secretary, garnered 92,153 votes, while rival Jeremy Hunt got 46,656 votes in a ballot of party members to take over from outgoing Prime Minister Theresa May when she steps down on Wednesday.
"Congratulations Boris Johnson on your election as leader of the Conservative Party and on becoming Prime Minister of the UK. I wish you good luck for the journey ahead, and look forward to building ever closer ties between our two nations under your leadership," posted Mnangagwa on Twitter.
Information ministry permanent secretary Nick Mangwana hoped that the coming in of Johnson would help mend relations between Zimbabwe and the UK.
"Zimbabwe and the United Kingdom share a lot historically. Even though the relationship has seen both good and bad days like any other, right now it's in a good place. We welcome and congratulate Prime Minister," he said. Ends
