President Robert Mugabe, who had visited Iran during the holding of 16th NAM summit, has backed Iran in its nuclear program and criticized the West for its hypocrisy and double standards over the issue.

President Mugabe, who was addressing the 16th Summit of heads of State and Government of the Non-Aligned Movement, said all nations had the right to peaceful use of nuclear energy. "It is regrettable that Iran is singled out for punishment when it desires to use nuclear power for peaceful and for developmental purposes for the benefit of it people," he added.

"The irony is that it is the countries that have nuclear weapons themselves, are making the loudest noises in accusing Iran for having the potential to make nuclear bombs, while Iran has declared that would never proceed toward production of nuclear weapons, and actually Iran is the most active country in nuclear disarmament in the world."
