Political observers say the seemingly reluctant attitude by government to avail funds to the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC) is unacceptable as the body must fulfil its constitutional mandate without fail.

Previous confessions by the electoral body that the institution is highly incapacitated due to lack of funding which government must avail urgently have come under spotlight.

Political observer Noah Mangondo says government's excuse that there are no funds for ZEC operations is just unacceptable while being an indicator of failure by the authorities to chart national business.

Political analyst Goodson Nguni has also cautioned Zimbabweans not to be duped through cheap politicking saying those who intend to rig the forthcoming elections want to do so through preventing ZEC from getting access to funding.

ZEC has indicated it needs $107 million for elections and $85 million for the referendum on the new constitution.

Analysts say the much awaited funding is already long overdue considering the amount of work the electoral body needs to do before holding the referendum and polls.
