plummets straight into the ground
London - A helicopter that crashed in London apparently "plummeted straight into the ground", said an ex-BBC producer.
The helicopter crashed near the River Thames in London.
A photo shown on Sky News showed wreckage burning in a street.
The London Fire Brigade said that two cars were also damaged by the crash.
According to Scotland Yard, the helicopter apparently hit a crane on top of a building.
Wandsworth Road near Vauxhall station has been closed, with apparent debris on the ground, and a crane at the top of a new high rise development appears to be damaged, a BBC reporter says.
Large plumes of black smoke were seen rising in the area, close to the Waterloo train station during the early morning rush hour.
London locals tweeted about the incident.
Belinda Moore wrote: "Just cycled in and saw lots of smoke over by Vauxhall, gather it's a helicopter crash, saw it flying low over Chelsea Bridge thought it odd."
Quin Murray said: "Helicopter just hit a crane and crashed a few metres in front of me in Vauxhall. Completely shaken."
There were no immediate reports of casualties but Sky News said at least one person was on the helicopter.
