CHENNAI, INDIA - Seven members of a gang murdered a man admitted to Government General Hospital late on Wednesday night, terrifying other patients and staff in the hospital.
The gang members entered the hospital with concealed weapons an hour before they set upon 41-year-old Prakash, a DMDK area secretary in RK Nagar, as he lay on his bed in ward 134 on the third floor of the hospital's Tower-1 block. Their faces concealed with handkerchiefs, the assailants pulled out knives and cleavers and attacked Prakash in front of his son at 10.40pm.
Witnesses said Dinesh, 15, was screaming for help as the gang attacked his father and patients and caregivers either attempted to hide or ran for their lives.
Doctors treated Prakash, admitted to the hospital on March 1 with a spinal cord problem, but he was grievously injured in the attack and died at 12.10am.
The gang escaped from the hospital but police apprehended them within three hours of the crime.
An investigating officer said the gang killed Prakash, a resident of Amaniamman Koil Garden, to avenge last year's murder of rowdy 'Pallu' Suresh. Prakash killed Suresh because he suspected that he was in a relationship with his wife, Thangamalar. Pallu Suresh's father-in-law had vowed to take revenge on Prakash.
Police arrested Nagaraj, 34, of Durga Nagar, Jothi alias Jothilingam, 50, and Shanmugam, 23, of Navalar Nagar, Suresh alias Pattu Suresh, 28, Mohan alias Thupakki Mohan, 26, and Abdul Salam, 23, of Rajiv Gandhi Nagar and Kumar, 28, of Nethaji Nagar. Investigating officers have charged them with the murder of Prakash.
Prakash had been linked to four murders and was involved in six attempts to murder and four other cases, the officer said.
Prakash's son had decided to spend the night in the hospital with his father. He was in a state of shock after the murder.
"I ran out and alerted some doctors and searched for policemen. But no one came to my father's rescue," Dinesh said.
"They came in with their faces covered, surrounded his bed and attacked him till he fell unconscious," said 70-year-old Chellappan, an asthma patient, who witnessed the murder.
Shantha, 60, whose son has been admitted to the hospital, said she covered herself and her son under a bedsheet when the gang members pulled out their weapons.
Hospital officials moved patients to Ward 124 soon after the attack and locked up Ward 134.
