Mugabe arrives in New York

President Robert Mugabe has arrived in New York, the United States, where he joins other world leaders for the 68th Session of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly.
He was met at the airport by the Zimbabwean Ambassador to the United States and other top embassy officials.
President Mugabe is accompanied by the First Lady, Amai Grace Mugabe, Foreign Affairs Minister, Cde Simbarashe Mumbengegwi and other senior government officials.
President Mugabe will take part in the General Assembly debate in which the world leaders will tackle various international issues affecting the world.
The 68th UN General Assembly, which started on Tuesday last wee, is being held under the theme: 'Post-2015 Development Agenda: Setting the Stage'.
The regular session of the assembly will discuss more than 170 items on the agenda.
The achievements of the UN's 8 Millennium Development Goals, whose deadline is 2015, will be one of the main issues under discussion.
The MDGs on poverty alleviation, education, gender equality, child and maternal health, environmental stability, HIV/AIDS reduction and global partnership for development were adopted in 2000.
The session is expected to build on the progress achieved by the MDGs.
Other issues on the agenda include Syria and other hotspots.
The 68th session will also host 3 thematic debates on the role of partnerships, how stable and peaceful societies can contribute to development, and how water, sanitation and sustainable energy can contribute to the post-2015 development agenda.
President of the 68th UN General Assembly is Mr John Ashe from Antigua and Barbuda who was elected on the 14th of June this year, while he was serving in the dual capacity as his country's permanent representative to both the United Nations and the World Trade Organisation, positions he held from 2004.
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has also alluded to the fact that the Syrian crisis is of major concern to the General Assembly.
