Scores of people attended the first annual ZAPU Canada Province 'Friends and Family Barbeque' on Saturday July the 2nd at Sunnybrook Park in the western suburbs of Toronto.
The event was the first of its kind organized by the growing Zapu district of Toronto, the (GTA District) under the skillful chairmanship of Nephat Siziba and vice-chair Victoria Chimanikire. Jean Mlaga, the hard working District Treasurer said that the district leadership would like to organize more events of this nature in future in order to provide a platform for ZAPU members, supporters and Zimbabweans in general to discuss issues affecting their homeland.
The GTA Secretary for Administration, Mr. Mike Ndlovu also said the atmosphere provided an 'excellent opportunity for members to identify leaders,' in the province to contest in the upcoming elective conference to elect a substantive Provincial Executive Council.
Those elections are due to take place at the end of July. The ZAPU Canada Elections Committee Chairperson, Mr. Raymond Ndlovu has already sent an invitation to all ZAPU branches, districts and the generality of Zapu membership in Canada to begin the nomination process. Mr. Ndlovu has repeatedly said that the interim structures needed to be dissolved soon to pave way for a substantive leadership structure in the province.
The BBQ was attended by Zimbabwean immigrants, young and old from all walks of life including former Zipra combatants originally from Harare and a preacher who hails from Mzilikazi suburb of Bulawayo. A few individuals took a break from their jobs and came 'to show their support,' and later returned to work. Also in attendance were ZAPU NEC member Andy Bango, and Regional Coordinator Felix F. Silundika.
The crowds enjoyed grilled meat and isitshwala/sadza (a popular Zimbabwean dish made from cornmeal) with vegetables. The cornmeal, popularly know as 'mealie meal' was donated by a Toronto based company. Originally the event was scheduled to last for 4 hrs but long after that people were still trickling in. Some families had to cut-short their religious retreat in the town of Fort Erie in order to join their friends in the BBQ event.
Some of the organizers, Oscar Simela and Lazarus Sidambe spent time mobilizing and recruiting new members. The province's Mobilizing Dept signed up a 'significant number' of new members. Some new recruits have already made their intentions to contest in the provincial election clear. ZAPU Canada wishes to do away with all interim structures in time to prepare for the party's 50th Golden Jubilee Celebrations on December 17th. A member of Zapu Canada province, Mr. Ocean Mlaga is mandated to oversee and coordinate the Golden Jubilee Celebrations in ZAPU's Diaspora Provinces. The Zimbabwe African People's Union, (ZAPU) Zimbabwe's oldest liberation movement and opposition party turns 50 this year.
