Paris - An Airbus A320 has crashed into the French Alps, a security source told AFP on Tuesday.

Reporter Hasan Sari tweeted that 142 passengers, two pilots and four crew were on board. The name of the airline was Germanwings.

The passenger plane was flying between Barcelona and Dusseldorf. Meanwhile, the French Armed Forces say two helicopters have spotted the plane debris.

A 'very brief' distress call was made just before a passenger Airbus went down, reports say. One-hundred and forty-eight people were on board.

More to follow.
