Drunk Zimbabwean student drowns in Canada

AUTHORITIES in Canada say a body has been found in the search for a Zimbabwean student who went under water in a Western Quebec river and never resurfaced.

The 23-year-old man whose identity has not been revealed but is believed to be from Zimbabwe was swept away by the current in the Gatineau River on Thursday.

A student at Algonquin College in Ottawa, the man could not swim and was intoxicated when he was swept away, police said.

Friends said they had been sitting at the foot of a bridge on the river when the third year student jumping off without warning and disappeared.

Police, firefighters and volunteer divers combed the river Thursday evening for several hours but suspended the search at 10:30 p.m.

Ground searches continued overnight. The river search resumed Friday morning with police divers from assisting the rescue services.

The man's body was found early Friday evening.

A police spokesperson said the man's family had been notified and were set to travel to Wakefield from Zimbabwe.
