The coming AGM for the Zapu Europe Province has seen Mama Thembie Mpofu challenge for the chairmanship. She is set to become the first woman to head the province. She will be facing stiff competition from the veteran politician, Mr Arthur Molife. She is mounting a strong challenge, judging by the attention she is drawing in the Zapu social and formal platforms.
Thembie Mpofu has an impressive CV covering her political and administrative acumen. She served Zapu as an administrative secretary for the Insiza District in the pre-Unity Accord era while doubling as a Post Master in a field dominated by men. She is well respected by those who know her personally.
Her role in helping revive the party in her local district in the West Midlands has seen her being nominated for the top job in the province.
Quizzed by Elder A. Sibanda how she would grow the party, she replied that she would encourage her team to go where the people are and spread the Zapu ideology of promoting democracy and respect for human rights. Thembie stated that she would recruit more youth and women in the party as this is the backbone of the party. She believes that Zapu's major challenges are recruitment and lack of resources.
"Under my leadership, the province will grow membership and engage in fundraising activities". Asked how she would achieve this, she stated that she would be a ‘hands on chairperson' and would join her team and others in recruiting new members'. She plans to visit the districts to assess how each can be grown. She handled the rest of her questions well thus demonstrating her political maturity and understanding of the party's ideology and policies.
She is currently engaged in youth projects back home in her home area of Insiza North. She has offered one of her coaches back home to be used for party activities.
Ms Thembie Mpofu has it all going for her, her enigma is fuelled by this oracular mystery of being unknown. Many had knowledge of her vision before she presented he manifesto yesterday; she won over many as she skilfully answered questions from the floor and clearly showed that she was up for the job.
Zapu's AGM is on the 30th April 2016 this weekend at the City of Leicester at the Church of Martyrs.
