Will opening a new border post solve the current problems?

Reacting to the abnormally long queues at the Beitbridge border over the past few days, Zimbabwe Education Minister David Coltart suggested that a new border post be considered between the two countries.

In his post Mr Coltart said: "We have to move from talk to urgent action ..... this situation needs a massive, urgent effort by both the South African and Zimbabwean governments. If need be, we should be considering the construction of another road to South Africa - for example, the most direct .... route is south through Kezi .... that road needs to be upgraded and a new border constructed over the Shashi and a road constructed through Botswana direct to, say, Martin's Drift."

The South African Chamber of Commerce & Industry expressed concern but said opening a new border, though a good idea, would not solve the current problems.

Chamber CEO Neren Rau said the idea should be "how to improve road efficiencies that would promote trade and movement of people".

Is this a feasible and good idea? Will this help or its a matter of attitude from officials?

Zimbabweans should stay at home and fix their problems rather than scavenging in SA and causing these unnecessary delays to other visitors to that country esp the tourists. Please stop blaming South African staff for whatever, blame yourselves for causing this chaos. What is it that Zimbabwe doesn't have and is only found in SA? In fact Zim has much more than SA has.

Squbu KaJubane says: That is an over ambitious thought. What needs to be done is fixing Zimbabwe's problems so that Zimbabweans do not end up inundating the South African side of the border. It's as simple as that.

U can open many boarders as u like but SA and Botswana officials are just bored by seeing zimbabweans in there countries.I wonnder if they is any management in those immigration offices they work at a snail pace the only thing Zimbabwe could do is 4 us to fix our country period.

Even the Zim side of the border they are also lazy and corrupt esp on the entrance side. Ask bus drivers they will confirm how they grease the officers palms in order to expedite clearance of their buses. Work at the border can be done efficiently by a fewer dedicated personnel. One does not need to be a university professor to come up with a solution to this problem. No solution can be found by authorities coz they are benefiting from this corruption. They will keep it like this to rake in more proceeds of corruption by their subordinates.

What is needed is not a new border post but a change of attitude by the RSA authorities, most of them are lazy & corrupt. They always work at a slow pace waiting for the end of their shift & if you have money you don't have to wait for long before you are attended to. Despite Rsa side having better resources than their Zim neighbours you find that the delays are mostly at their side because they always think that every traveller is a Zimbabwean & nuisance. We can open as many border posts as we can but without a change of attitude the problem will pesist.

Boarder such as in the USA and Mexico handle far more traffic than what we see at Beitbridge, its all in the systems in place to handle traffic, you can have 100 boarders but if the systems to process traffic are the way they are, things will remain the same.

Zim has to mitigate its economical constraints so that its people do not become so nomadic to RSA and elsewhere.

There is no need for a new border post but what is needed is need for the South African border

post personnel to change their attitude towards

travelers and smoothen efficiency. They think there are angels saving people yet just ordinary employees being impossibly stupid for nothing.

If they open another border and the attitude remains the same kuyafana. Phela eborder its not about ukuthi there are a few border posts, the RSA officials are lazy to work. They must train those officers to be efficient only.
