Was is it fair for Oliver Mtukudzi as Guest of honor to speak in Shona through out his speech - Live Discussion

The new constitution of Zimbabwe recognizes all languages as official, but was it fair for Tuku an accomplished musician as the guest of honor to speak in Shona through out his speech?

I believe he is free to use his mother language but he did so in the presence of many artists and Bulawayo residents who could not hear or understand what he was talking about.

Lets be civil as we discuss this singathethisani (no swearing ) please!

Tuku has played in byo so many times and has never played his songs in ndebele but shona and no one has complained what if he does not have a good command for English in Zimbabwe you speak a language you understand most

@Moyo..I think for the future management should cater for wonku muntu..if in Mashonaland, a Ndebele translator ought to be there..if in Matebeleland again a Shona translator ought to be!!and for the future let's learn each other's languages!!Shonas must learn Ndebele and Ndebeles likewise!!

Let's not sensationalise a small issue here I live with ndebeles in gokwe jahana area vauyi kuno gokwe but meet a ndebele person he always speak in ndebele even among shonas but we don't complain because this is zimbabwe where everyone is entitled to speak his or her language of choice

  • Tatenda

    17 Feb 2013 at 17:18hrs

@Moyo..I am not disputing the fact that speaking Shona amongst a crowd where most of them don't understand shona was right..that was very wrong!!but Tuku did not invite himself there or organise the event..the organisers were supposed to make sure that there are translators!!Zimbabwe has Shona and Ndebele artists..Ndebeles and Shonas make Zimbabwe..and if people organise events and do not cater for translators, kuwrong lokhu!!

  • Pere Ndlovu

I see no problem here, is Shona not an official language? If Shona is an official language I see no reason why this question needs discussion. Problem is amaNdebele, they want to use isilungu or other languages when they can use their Ndebele. I have seen it, when there are 5 Ndebeles and 1 Shona guy, Ndebeles tend to use Shona for whatever reasons. So don't blame Tuku, Ndebeles must come out of their inferiority complex and also use their language whether in heaven or hell. Tuku was rite.

I really for once Ndebeles and Shonas would just love each other and try to learn each other's languages and customs!!I have so many Ndebel frens whom I teach Shona and they teach me Ndebele..we don't insult or call each other funny names or arrange gangs on each other..I am dissapointed in most comments that I read below..such hate and so many insults are cause for concern..its scary..tjo!!

    17 Feb 2013 at 16:55hrs

They say learn 2 talk shona f u want 2 go 2 heaven, its better 4 heaven 2 stay lonely than 2 use Shona as my passport!Ndebele i remain simply Tuku Ndebele z a Zim Language so t was a must 4 u 2 talk in Ndebele in Matland coz know one will understand yo Shona simply!

  • Tatenda

    17 Feb 2013 at 16:54hrs

Tuku wasn't even supposed to arrange a translator..he was invited to give a speech..the organisers were supposed to make sure the translator was there and not Tuku..its not his fault tht he can't speak Ndebele..and its not a Ndebele's fault either when he is not willing to speak Shona!!!

  • Moyo Roy

Thank you @Tatenda for pointing that out, no insults please guys

  • Tatenda

    17 Feb 2013 at 16:45hrs

My question though..if a ndebele had come to mashonaland would s/he speak in english??or at least try to speak in shona..I am amazed at some arrogant fellows here who straight away go to call and insult Tuku in Ndebele..calling him names like dogs etc..the post calls for a reasonable and educated debate and not arrogant fools who quickly rush to insult and talk crap about Tuku..question implores people to comment on fairness and not to show stupidity by raining insults!!!!

  • Jojo

There r 2 official languages in Zimbabwe, ChiShona & others. If Tuku chose 2 speak in the language of the majority, why worry about the rest(minority). Kana pane akarwadziwa nezvakaitwa naMukoma Tuku, Go Hang. We , as Zimbabweans cant suffer just becoz of foreigners.

Absolutely nothing wrong with Tuku speaking in an ethnic language. The speech was powerful because he spoke in vernacular rather than in English.

Disappointed that this i even a subject for debate. let's celebrate our languages. and our diversity.
