Is this a perfect time for Botswana to criticise SADC? - Live Discussion

by Moyo Roy
28 Jan 2014 at 00:08hrs | Views
In an interview recently aired on Botswana's national television station, BTV, President Ian Khama said Zim elections were neither free nor fair.

Khama also announced that Botswana will no longer participate in any SADC election observer missions, because the leadership bloc appears to have let Zimbabwe "off the hook".

Zanu-PF politburo member and Information Minister Professor Jonathan Moyo on Monday said Khama comments are a ploy by the Botswana leader to get the European Union to extend its sanctions on Zimbabwe.

Botswana become the first Southern African nation to criticise the regional bloc's endorsement of Zimbabwe's disputed elections.

Is it not too late for Khama to challenge SADC on the issue?

this pale devil called Ian Khamani is a hypocrite, he endorsed the elections only to come today and say bla bla bla, what he does not seem to understand is that those at grass root level are the most affected, not his perceived nemesis; zanu pf

You are either benefiting from the corrupt gvt or dull if you think elections were not rigged. Its sad that while pple are suffering in our beloved country we have got very shortsighted individuals who think in the midst of this situation truth must not be told .no matter how you try to blindfold pple, u cannot fool everyone.Sanctions were aimed @ the oppressors not the masses silly, they are used to travelling oversees to enjoy our tax while our roads , schools hospitals are in need of serious attention, where are their kids , oversees, where are yours , home suffering, and you want pple to believe all is well

The travel restrictions, which the government of Zimbabwe have re-coined economic sanctions, should remain. Theses buggers started making repeated trips to Europe when they were relaxed . . SADC has failed because it is lead by a bunch of old buggers who know one day they will be in gabriels shoes and they want the system in place that is protecting him to be in place. Same oppression different players.

I am not saying the government of Zimbabwe is without fault however those sanctions are a major contribution to the suffering of ordinary Zimbabwean and president Karma is failing to recognize the rights of the bushmen in Botswana wants to teach the rest of Africa about democracy, I believe if you go and ask a bushman in botswana about Karma they will probably call him a dictator too

Yes. This is a perfect moment for those who do not want to be used by crooks, murderers and dictators hiding behind "observing elections" as a region while they are just endorsing each other's governness be it brutal or not against its own people. Ian Khama is alright.

@slaelo, traitors r people who wudwink masses and pretend to be with them, when in fact they r against them in deeds. We can say African, African but where does that take us when everybody believes life is about to get out of the country!! Where have you hear in your time or before that country can have more its population out of its borders than those who remain in? How do u feel as father seeing your children crowding in your neighbour,s houses in search of food? You call them crazy!! Who is crazy? From a bread backet of Africa to a basket of beggers!! We live by importing everything and exporting nothing while sitting on everything you may need. To HELL with all of them. The end is near, we will see.

Ian Khama is correct,I've been saying this long ago,how can you appoint well known dictators Hifikinye Pohamba,Sam Nujoma Theodore Mbasogo Obiang Ngwema,Eduardo Dos Santos,Mswati,Letsie, crazy Michael Sata&etc to solve or monitor one of theirs&expect fair results??These Dictators are backing each other big time,Those observers was just a sick sick joke,How can Mugabe won elections two thirds majority while non of Zimbabweans are voting already tested&failed party??Ngamasimba wodwa lawa,uMugabe was out voted by Zimbabweans in 2000 but he's still imposing himself on us,seriously, this man&his goons don't respect Zimbabweans

Any African who supports sanctions against other african country is a traitor and are we supposed to believe that Botswana in the whole Africa is the only country that can define what's free and fair on elections.president Karma must remember the day that his county's interest clashes with the west agenda they will try to get rid of him just like every leader in the Africa who tries to put the interest of his people first

  • ANON

Some might say he is right and some otherwise but i really think we as Zimbabweans need to move on. The elections issue was last year, and whether one likes it or not there isn't going to be a backtrack culminating in fresh elections. It pains me to see us Zimbabweans not sticking together to ensure our country picks itself up from the where it is at the moment. Zimboz the timr is now, let us work to build our country and economy... Perhaps when that is done we can divert our attention to the looters and the corrupt. We will not win on an empty stomach. They have enough money to play us against each other.

Prof Moyo is talking nonse by accusing Khama for the latter's wish to have sanctions extended. There is no brother, brother story here. This is what made sadc and all African countries to support one another even at withcraft practices. There r no sanctions that r crippling the masses, but hinder the 'top' from making useless flights to USA, Brt, etc. Remember when mugabe goes, all 'ministers board the plane for the sake it. We r told of millions spent on tickets nad hotes for nothing. Let sanctions stay so that all of us including the 'chef' get it hard to live may be they will change and let others lead. Sanctions, sanctions they hiding behind sanctions for their failures. We will see coz the rope is titening the neck. This Jonathan thing who does not know where he is standing, will find himself rounded by wolves. He must know that a slight mistake will throw him out of the circle. He and his children r enjoying while our children suffer. Let us all suffer or all enjoy.

Khama is the ONLY president who is on the side of Zim masses. His threats of withdrawal from the usesless sadc is a demonstration of anger about Zim situation as he knows fully that Zim does not belong it is. Viva Khama viva. You don't go with rest but you go with what is right.

Let him expose the rot. Zimboz r tired of people who think they r God when they r devil. You can't imagine that the country is plunged into ruins like this, but we have leaders who better known for looting than developing the country like other leaders. Zim is worse than Somalia which does nto have a gvt. When I think of how those people's children r enjoying while ours spend day and night crying hunger, I feel I should be insane and confront those stupid looters and have them all HANGED, no mercy.

SADC/AU are useless and there is nothing wrong by removing self or country from such a group. To hell with Zma and his team, people have suffered. Speak Khama speak

True Samuel, that refusal of Zec with balot papers is an acknowlwdgent of the rigging that took place. Zec could have quickly opened the balots to prove inocense, that they konw their dirt linen, they couldn't hand it on the line. Khama is right as he is always right by wanting things to done correctly.

Khama has voiced his critics against this babaric gvt ever since he came into power. He needs things to be done the right way. He is also under pressure to Zim immigrants who are looking for food hand outs in his country due to babarism of Mugabe and his cronies. The porb is that he is fighting the battle alone while rest SADC keeps on claping hands for mugabe no matter what. Sadc is just nothing but a name.

The issue being raised by Khama is valid and timely. Our elections remain contested. If our elections were free, fair and credible why is it that ZEC 6 months after elections can't produce an electronic voters roll? What more proof do u need to show the elections were rigged or Nikuved? These stolen elections are affecting the economy badly. We need billions of USDs to fix this economy. That money will not come until we fix governance issues. Khama is right!

Its not as easy as you may take it. Its not the right time from what we would have liked. Maybe he cld hv wanted a different voice to point that out. Sometimes it pains to be the lone voice always pointing at some evil that your brothers are so fond of.

Yes the time is right. There are 5 elections to be held in Africa this year and a Zimbabwe delegation of businessmen is in Europe persuading EU to give financial assistance to Zimbabwe and lift sanctions in spite of the stolen elections. Its an uphill task in the absence of good governance in Zimbabwe. It's not clear what this delegation intends to achieve. Maybe the business delegation was given certain assurances by the GOZ. The problem though is that nobody in the World trusts the Zanu Pf govt anymore. The govt has broken promises in the past and nobody trusts it anymore. GOZ needs to settle the $10 billion debt issue first. It remains to be seen whether or not GOZ has the political will to make the IMF SMP route work. Can Zanu Pf change at all? We all doubt it and without trust and confidence Zimbabwe is doomed.
