HIV negative people who are at high risk of contracting the deadly virus will soon be given anti-retroviral drugs as a preventive measure.

Currently, life prolonging anti-retroviral drugs are being administered to people who have been tested and found to be HIV positive.

Vice President Emmerson Mnangagwa last week said Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis will go a long way in preventing new infections.

"Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis for those people who are at high risk of contracting HIV has also been introduced with these guidelines.

"This means that people who see themselves as having a high risk of acquiring HIV such as those in discordant relationships (different HIV statuses) will take some Anti-Retroviral medications to prevent themselves from getting infected with HIV".

Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis is the administration of anti-retroviral drugs before exposure to prevent HIV negative people from acquiring the virus.

Post-Exposure Prophylaxis is currently available for people who have been exposed, like nurses, during the course of their duty and rape victims.

More than 940 000 people are on anti-retroviral treatment in the country.
