Zimbabwe's urban council's have given their thumps on governments plans of setting  up tollgates in all centers.

The Urban Councils' Association of Zimbabwe (UCAZ) gave its full support to the idea first mooted in 2013.

In 2013, the then Transport minister, Obert Mpofu announced the proposal to introduce urban tollgates soon after his appointment.

The proposal was received with mixed reactions from different interested parties but government insisted that the system had more merits than disadvantages.

Interested parties felt government needed to complete establishment of tollgates on the highways while others said urban tolls could worsen congestion.

UCAZ president and Harare mayor Bernard Manyenyeni said there should be  transparency in the management of revenue collected from the tollgates.

"We don't mind a cost-effective revenue collection set-up provided the end value is guaranteed, unlike now, where motorists are asking what their licence fees are doing for them," Manyenyeni said.
