Harare City Council on Wednesday teamed up with the Zimbabwe Republic Police to raid vendors selling wares in the central business district.

The blitz aimed at containing the spread of water-borne disease outbreaks continues today.

Council recently imposed a ban on selling of food by vendors.

The food ban followed a typhoid outbreak, which claimed two lives in Mbare.

Food, such as fruits, meat, maize, fish and vegetables was confiscated and destroyed at the Harare Municipal Police Headquarters.
Illegal vendors trading in other wares were not spared as Council also pounced on them.

Municipal police officers roped in members of the Zimbabwe Republic Police and raided undesignated vending sites in the city.

Council spokesperson, Michael Chideme said the operation would continue today.

"We have started the exercise of removing vendors from the streets. We started with the CBD today [yesterday].

"The exercise is going to spread into the suburbs, to remove all vendors trading food until the typhoid outbreak is contained," he said.
