MDC-T senior official Tapiwa Mashakada has said Zimbabwe's Tourism Minister Walter Mzembi is the most qualified candidate for the World Tourism Organisation secretary general position.
Mzembi is one of the contestants for the post.
"Mzembi is the most qualified candidate for the post of WTO Secretary General but I don't think he is getting the necessary support and back-up back home. He is the AU candidate but there is a conspiracy of silence by the local media. DR Mzembi is only the flag bearer," he said.
"The post is for Zimbabwe. Resources equal results. While the President is on leave one of his deputies must be gallivanting across the globe drumming up support for the Zimbabwean candidate. Ironically his Ministry was only given about $3 million in the national budget. This is too little to mount a formidable international campaign. In fact the $3million must be just for his campaign."
He said there other nugatory travel expenditures which are made by govt officials including the head of state which do not bring anything meaningful back home. Resources equal results.
"In 2015 , Chief Charumbira lost the Presidency of the Pan-African Parliament just because the govt did not support him with enough resources. When it comes to international posts, money counts. The other disturbing thing is the fact of the Seychelles also fielding a candidate against the AU consensus," he said.
"Only last year Zimbabwe removed visa requirements for Seycholiones visiting Zimbabwe. They can now get visas at the port of entry upon arrival. But the shenanigans by the Seychelles Archpelago merely confirms a readable pattern of Zimbabwe's splendid isolation on the international arena. When will African countries learn to understand Pan-Africanism and walk the talk? Hon Dr Mzembi you are the best candidate. This election is only for you to lose."
