Work on the Phase 2 Rehabilitation and Expansion Programme of Nyakomba Irrigation Scheme in Nyanga North constituency is well on course, with site offices and accommodation facilities having been completed.

The Phase 2 Expansion Programme, also includes construction of pumping facilities, pipelines, irrigation canals, farm pond, drainage, replacement and repairing of existing pumping facilities and flood protection structures, and a pumping station for Block B, C and D which was damaged by floods in 2000.

A senior Government official with the Ministry of Agriculture, Mechanisation and Irrigation who spoke on condition of anonymity said the Ministry was happy with the progress made at Nyakomba Irrigation Scheme.

"Despite the works having been slackened by the good rains we are receiving, work is well on course and within our time-lines. Site accommodation and offices have been completed," the official is quoted as saying.

He added: "We are now working on preparatory work on the actual project and as soon as the rain subsides it will be back to work."

The project is being funded by Japan International Co-Operation Agency (JAICA) to the tune of US$18 million.

The expansion of the irrigation scheme will go a long way in stabilising the supply of water, thus ensuring all year round of production of agricultural crop by small scale farmers.

Once completed the irrigation scheme will see an additional 146 hectares being added under irrigation.

The development will result in an additional 230 farmers coming on board putting the total number of beneficiaries at 861 small holder farmers.
