BULAWAYO City Council (BCC) has vowed to address the cleanliness of the city by embarking on a massive clean-up campaign next year, an official has said.
In an interview with Sunday News, Bulawayo mayor, Councillor Thaba Moyo, said they had since realised that dirt was now becoming an eyesore in the city centre hence the need for them to allocate a huge chunk of their resources to cleaning the city and reviving its status as one of the cleanest cities in the region.
"We are not satisfied with the state of the city in terms of cleanliness, our streets are becoming an eyesore as almost every corner has a pile of garbage and litter is lying everywhere, yes we can say we will impose hefty fines to those caught littering but we also have to come up with a wholesome approach that will see the city become very clean, this alone would deter would-be litterbugs," said Clr Moyo.
He said they would embark on a citywide clean-up campaign right through the year and would also educate their residents on the dangers of littering.
The mayor said they would also focus on rehabilitating the city's road network, which was now in a dire state.
"We have since realised that pothole patching is not the solution because it is not permanent so we have started and will continue with a complete overhaul of our roads, the Government recently gave us some money and we will be using it for this very project," he said.
Clr Moyo said they would strive to engage other sectors with the hope of coming up with private public partnerships that would see them being able to address most of their nagging commitments.
Turning to the water issue the mayor said while they were not worried, as they believed their water levels were not in dangerous levels but would continue engaging Government to complete the Mtshabezi- Umzingwane pipeline link project.
"We are also aiming at reducing the amount of water that is lost through leaks or spillages, we want to make sure that what we produce reaches our residents, as we get into 2012 we want to see how much water we have then we can effectively plan ahead but I can safely say they won't be any major water shedding in the near future," said Clr Moyo.
