Kombi drivers fed up with bribe demanding cops
14 Mar 2017 at 06:40hrs | Views
Bulawayo traffic police officers have been accused of extorting money from commuter omnibus drivers claiming to be conducting 'operation'.
Plain clothed cops have in recent days increased patrols at undesignated pick up points in the city.
According to drivers, the cops normally move in groups of fours and pretend to be ordinary passengers.
However, a few seconds after boarding a kombi they tell the driver that he is under arrest.
"They give us two options to either bribe them $30 or they take the car to Drill Hall traffic section. We are fed up with this behaviour.
"However, drivers now opt to go to Drill Hall to pay a fine which is usually receipted for $15.
"But we part with $30. This is better because we will show our bosses the receipt when we cash in" said one driver.
The driver added that the un-receipted $15 is for the top duty traffic boss on duty.
Pirate Honda Fit cars also pay $30 fines when 'caught'.
On Monday, Bulawayo24.com saw about 20 kombis at Drill Hall traffic section with drivers waiting to pay fines.
