Addressing lawyers and guests at the High Court of Zimbabwe held in Bulawayo during the opening of the 2012 legal year, Justice George Chiweshe the current level of the jurisdiction of magistrate courts was too low and thus caused unnecessary backlog of cases at the High Court.
He added that there was need to urgently review the civil jurisdiction of the said courts.
He said: "The current level of the jurisdiction of the Magistrates Courts which is US$2000 is too low.
"Due to this low figure the workload at the High Court has unduly has unduly been increased. Therefore, there is need to urgently review civil jurisdiction of the magistrate's courts," he said.
