There is an uproar at Chiredzi prison over demands by senior officials who are demanding money from junior officers so as to get rice which was donated by government.
Impeccable sources within the system are pointing fingers at senior prison officer Matavire and the Officer in Charge only identified Matipiwa who are said to be demanding a $1 upfront payment before one gets a 50 kg bag of rice.Despite the fact that the money is too little not to afford, junior members have complained that they feel cheated since the rice is a donation which must be given to them for free.
Other sources said the $1 which is being demanded by senior officials is a Commissioner's Goodwill which is supposed by willing members of the force to support charity work which is being undertaken by the ZPCS commissioner Paradzai Zimhondi. However the money has been made compulsory by senior officers against their will.
"We are being forced to pay the $1 for the commissioner's goodwill so as to get our rice. This is tantamount to forcing us to pay the money against our will. All the junior officers are not happy here" said some prison officers who prepared not to be named.
The same sources said due to the economic hardship where the generality of Zimbabweans are leaving on below a dollar per day budget, they are not at liberty to fork out a day's budget to get what is freely due to them.
"Considering the current economic situation in the country, it is inhuman on the part of the bosses to force us to pay through the nose" they said.
The same sources said the same scenario happened sometime back when they were also asked to pay for farm implements that was also donated to them.
Efforts to get a comment from Matavire and Matipiwa hit a brick wall at the time of going to print.
