BULAWAYO Governor and Resident Minister Ambassador Cain Mathema has castigated the European Union's (EU) visit to Matabeleland this week, saying he has no time to entertain the bloc which imposed sanctions on the country, a move likely going to leave the delegation with egg on the face.

The EU delegation announced that it will be "moving" to Bulawayo for one week with the aim of understanding specific issues affecting Matabeleland.

The delegation headed by Ambassador Aldo Dell'Ariccia and other senior staff will engage with local, economic, social and political representatives to seek insight on future prospects of engagement in Matabeleland.

In a statement Ambassador Dell'Ariccia had indicated that Governor Mathema will be the EU delegation's first port of call in their five-day visit.

However, Governor Mathema brushed their intentions aside and said he would not host the delegation because Bulawayo just like the rest of the country was suffering from the effects of the sanctions imposed by EU and her allies.

The Governor said the whole of Zimbabwe was dying and emphasised he had no time to sit, have tea with detractors who had destroyed the country.

The governor strongly blasted the EU for 'unlawful' sanctions accusing them of creating a terrible state of affairs in every corner of Zimbabwe.

Governor Mathema said what EU had done was equal to "genocide" as they had destroyed a booming country and disheartened the spirit of the people.

"Look at the working conditions in the country. Our institutions have no resources. In hospitals there are no drugs, no equipment. Our people are dying because of that and that is genocide," he said.
