Airport Road accident, two victims named

Bulawayo POLICE have released names of the two people who died when a Bedford truck they were travelling in rammed into a street lamp in Queens Park along Airport Road at about 10am on Saturday.
The Bedford lorry's brakes failed resulting in the driver failing to give way to a delivery truck which in turn sideswiped it before it overturned and crashed into a street light.
Police spokesperson for Bulawayo Province, Inspector Mandlenkosi Moyo said the deceased were Proud Masalela (47), a female adult from Plot 3, Fairbridge in Bulawayo, and Ndombora Ncube (53) of village 4, Ward 2 in Induna area.
Inspector Moyo said a total of 15 people were injured but have since been treated at hospital and discharged.
"A total of 15 people, including the driver, were injured and rushed to the hospital. They have since been treated and discharged and the driver is helping the police with investigations," said Insp Moyo.
The driver of the truck, Mr Munyaradzi Phiri (29) was among the injured, contrary to earlier media reports, which claimed that he was killed in the accident.
Passengers who spoke to Chronicle said the truck was on its way to Nyamandlovu in Umguza District carrying them to attend the graduation and 60th birthday celebrations of the Minister of Mines and Mining Development, Dr Obert Mpofu.
They said the driver who was trying to avoid police roadblocks along the way from Imbizo Barracks and Fairbridge, cut through Mahatshula to Queens Park, en-route to Dr Mpofu's homestead in Nyamandlovu.
Most of the surviving passengers, who escaped without injuries, however looked for alternative transport and proceeded to Dr Mpofu's birthday celebrations, while a few decided to abandon the trip.
