Bulawayo's roads set for major facelift

The Municipality of Bulawayo has embarked on a US$6.2 million road maintenance programme that will see the city's road network getting a major facelift.
As part of the 2017 emergency road rehabilitation programme, major roads in the City of Kings are undergoing a facelift which involves reconstruction, resealing and overlaying of surfaced parts.
The project that is expected to be completed by the end of the year was necessitated by the damage caused by the heavy rains received during the last rainy season, resulting in national roads being declared a state of national disaster.
To date 162km of local streets have been patched and 109km of drains cleared in a project that is divided into three phases that include routine maintenance works as well as earthworks and surfacing works.
Senior public relations officer for the City of Bulawayo, Mrs Nesisa Mpofu indicated that the project was meant to retain the beauty of the city while ensuring the road network was in line with regional trends.
The project also sees the installation of traffic signs in line with the statutory instrument 41 of 2016 to conform to the SADC road traffic safety manual standards.
Different road signs have been changed with calls for the motoring public to take note of the changes that are meant to curb the occurrence of accidents on the roads.
