SEVEN people, two of them children, were injured after a speeding kombi rammed into the back of a stationary commuter omnibus along Masiyephambili drive in Bulawayo's Magwegwe suburb yesterday.

Witnesses said the commuter omnibus, which hit another kombi, was seemingly involved in a race with a Toyota quantum.

When the driver saw the stationary kombi, he applied emergency brakes, but it was too late, resulting in the accident.

Bulawayo provincial Police Spokesperson Inspector Precious Simango confirmed the accident.

"Seven people were injured, two of them pedestrians, when a kombi rammed into another kombi," she said.

A witness Mrs Nomathemba Ndebele said the kombi was speeding.

"We saw the Kombi and a quantum approaching us at very high speeds. The two vehicles seemed to be racing and when the other driver noticed the stationary kombi, he tried to avoid it but it was too late as the quantum was close. Swerving to the other side was not possible as he would've collided with the Quantum. He then hit the kombi and both kombis fell into a storm drain," she said.

Recently, National police spokesperson Chief Superintendent Paul Nyathi said some motorists were failing to take heed of road traffic safety awareness campaigns held by the police and Traffic Safety Council of Zimbabwe (TSCZ).

"It's sad to note that most road traffic accidents have been attributed to speeding, overtaking errors, inattention or misjudgement and failure by drivers to give way," said Chief Supt Nyathi.
