Commuters in Bulawayo are this morning subjected to strenuous body search by armed police looking for dangerous weapons ahead of President Robert Mugabe's visit on Thursday.

Mugabe would be in Bulawayo for the first time this year to attend the Annual Traditional Chiefs' Conference which kicks off today. Kombi's from the western suburbs are stopped at McKeurtun Primary School and passengers ordered out.

"Police are telling us that they are looking for dangerous weapons. We wonder what prompted this as there was no prior notice" said Alice Ndlovu who works in the city centre.

She added that her kombi was stopped for close to 15 minutes adding that no single weapon was found in her kombi.

Anyone carrying a bag is searched and those that resist are threatened with arrest.

Another passenger said the random stops are delaying them to arrive at work. In the city centre there is a heavy police presence especially at Large City car park area.

The car park and City Hall would be used as the venue.

A huge tent has been erected.
