A Bulawayo man, Edward Nyamadzi Kamutsidza (36) was arrested on Monday morning for masquerading as a medical doctor.

Kamutsidza, of House Number 12 Gredon Road, Queens Park West, was arrested on about 9.30am (Monday) at the corner of Josiah Tongogara Street and 9th Avenue opposite Galen House where a number of medical doctors have surgeries.

It is said that Kamutsidza would use his cellphone to connect with potential patients before visiting them at their homes to treat them for a fee.

Criminal Investigations Department (CID) co-ordinator for Bulawayo, Matabeleland North and South provinces, Assistant Commissioner Erasmus Makodza, confirmed Kamutsidza's arrest on Tuesday.

"I confirm that Edward Nyamadzi Kamutsidza has been arrested for practising as a medical doctor while not registered as defined in Section 121 (1) (A) of the Health Professionals

Act, Chapter 27:19," said Asst Comm Makodza.

"The accused is an unemployed Bulawayo resident whose qualifications are yet to be ascertained."

Asst Comm Makodza said detectives arrested Kamutsidza following a tip-off from members of the public who informed them that Kamutsidza was practising as a medical doctor without requisite qualifications.

"Acting on this information, a team of detectives put the accused on surveillance and arrested him at the corner of Josiah Tongogara Street and 9th Avenue opposite Galen House in the Central Business District where he was waiting to pick up his clients.

"He was driving a Honda Accord, green in colour, registration number ABA 3519," said Asst Comm Makodza.

He said the detectives immediately conducted a search in Kamutsidza's car and recovered used medical equipment.

The equipment included a stethoscope, safety first aid kit bag, urine bag, a drip cable, latex gloves, sterile razor blade, used and unused syringes, individual patients' clinical records, which were either stamped from Mpilo Central Hospital or the United Bulawayo Hospitals (UBH).

Asst Comm Makodza said preliminary investigations have established that Kamutsidza was specialising in the treatment of blood pressure (BP) and stomach ailments.

He said further investigations were still underway.
