Local Government Rural and urban Development minister Ignatius Chombo has commended the Bulawayo City Council  for maintaining cleanliness and health standards in the city to prevent the spread of diseases.

Chombo's sentiments come in the wake of recent reports of typhoid outbreak in Harare and surrounding areas that has affected about 1 500 people.

Chombo said Bulawayo deserved special recognition as it managed to avoid diseases despite its looming water crisis.

"It is commendable that Bulawayo has remained the cleanest city despite its water crisis. Almost every year, Bulawayo is faced with water problems but we have not heard of any outbreaks of cholera, typhoid and dysentery," said Chombo.

Chombo's party Zanu-PF was recently quoted in the media claiming that the outbreak was a result of biological warfare and western sanctions.

However, Health and Child Welfare Minister Dr Henry Madzorera warned the outbreak would spread to other towns because of collapsing water and sewer infrastructure.

President Mugabe, in power since 1980, has blamed sanctions imposed on his inner circle for the southern Africa country's economic collapse.

He told the African Union summit early this year that the West wanted to recolonise the continent as evidenced by the Arab Spring.
