POLICE in Bulawayo have arrested a 27-year-old man from Nkulumane 12 suburb for making a false armed robbery report.

Herbert Imbayago Dzikatirai of House Number 15298 in Nkulumane 12 is accused of fabricating a case of armed robbery at Nkulumane Police Station.

The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) co-ordinator for Bulawayo, Matabeleland North and South, Assistant Commissioner Erasmus Makodza, confirmed the incident.

He said Dzikatirai, who is employed as a technician at the National Railways of Zimbabwe, was duped by three men and has admitted to making a false report.

"On Sunday at about 3pm, the accused was driving his white Toyota Corolla, registration number AAT 6540, on his way home from an AFM church service in Nkulumane.

"Along the way, at the intersection of Khami and Intemba roads, he was stopped by three men who were feigning an argument," said Asst Comm Makodza.

"Two of the accused persons posed as Zambians while the other posed as a Mozambican. The three duped the complainant into believing that they needed an interpreter to assist them in sealing a business transaction."

Asst Comm Makodza said Dzikatirai fell for the trick after being offered a $200 fee.

He said in the process of conducting the non-existent transaction, Dzikatirai was robbed of $258 and a Nokia cellphone with two lines (numbers given), valued at $298.

Asst Comm Makodza said the three men fled from the scene towards Pumula South.

"On the same day at about 6pm, upon realising that he had been conned, Dzikatirai fabricated a story and reported a fake case of armed robbery at Nkulumane Police Station.

"Following the report, the case was referred to CID Homicide for further investigation where it was revealed that Dzikatirai had made a false report out of fear of his wife," he said.

"He has admitted to making a false report to the police and will appear in court soon. Further developments will be communicated in due course.

"It is a serious offence to make a false report to the police especially to mention that it was an armed robbery. Police will not take it lightly and will not hesitate to arrest such people."
