The 46th Kamandama commemorations have kicked off in Hwange in memory of the 427 mine workers who died in an underground explosion on the 6th of June in 1972.
As per tradition, the commemorations kicked off a day before with a golf tournament aimed at raising funds to support the surviving widows who lost their spouses during the disaster.
This year over US$20 000 was raised from the one day tournament.
Relatives, friends, former colleagues of the victims are thus gathered at the Kamandama Memorial Site for the service which is also being attended by government officials, Zanu PF leadership, religious leaders, traditional leaders and members of the community.
Local artists are also adding flavour to the memorial service by reciting poems and performing plays that promote the issues of safety at the workplace.
