One of Bulawayo's prominent businessmen has reportedly received chilling death threats from a man who had allegedly masqueraded as a "bonafide" Zanu-PF youth member as retribution for refusing to donate towards the 21st February Movement Gala which was held in Chipinge.

Wyne Newton Biebner of Number 11A Holdengarde Avenue in Hillside and proprietor of Grey's Garage along 12th Avenue and Josiah Tongogara in (Bulawayo) following repeated threats to end his life, reported the matter to police leading to the arrest of the alleged "hangman" Victor Chiponda.

For the offence, Chiponda of Number 5 Masony Court situated along George Silundika and Connaught Avenue was brought before Bulawayo magistrate Mr Shepherd Mjanja. He was being charged with extortion as defined in section 134 (1) (a) of the Criminal Law (Cordification and Reform) Act Chapter 9:23.

The court heard that during the period between 21 February and 16 March this year the accused person masqueraded as a Zanu-PF youth member visiting the complainant on four different occasions. He was reportedly demanding fuel saying he wanted to ferry the party's youths to Chipinge for the 21st February Movement Gala.

The court further heard that Chiponda was doing this without the blessing of the Zanu-PF provincial command. It is reported that on 16 March, Chiponda went to the complainant's garage and failed to locate him but managed to talk to his wife. Chipinda in a desperate bid to force the complainant to bow down to his demands, allegedly read a riot act to his wife saying: "Tell him (Biebner) this is Zimbabwe not Rhodesia I am coming to kill him."

Following the life threatening words, the complainant's wife alerted her husband who later made a report to the police leading to the arrest of the accused person. Chiponda when asked about his attitude towards the charge, he denied it. The matter was deferred to 2 April for trial and the accused person is out of custody on $120 bail.

Mrs Masimba Sarukawa appeared for the State.
