Change of provincial names will end tribalism - Mathema

Bulawayo Governor Cain Mathema has called for the renaming of the country's provinces to eliminate tribal connotations in the present names.
Presenting a public lecture at the Midlands State University, Mathema said the names were not accommodative of other tribes.
"These names stalk fires of tribalism, hatred and unending intertribal suspicions and conspiracies. We have beautiful rivers and mountains that we can call our province with," said Mathema.
"I strongly suggest that our constitution, the executive and parliament change the names of provinces so that everyone feels accommodated."
Mathema said the provincial boundaries were created by the colonialist settler regime to divide the people.
"These names were created by Rhodes to artificially divide the people. Before colonialism, there were never such divisions of the country. Therefore, those who make noise about these boundaries are nothing but agents of Rhodes, Jameson and the whole tribe of British imperialists," he said.
"By implication, the only Shonas are Zezurus and Manyika people and the Ndaus and Shangaans in Manicaland do not have their distinction from the Manyika people. It would also appear that Masvingo and Midlands provinces do not belong to Shonas, Manyikas and Ndebeles as their names are neutral."
