A Bulawayo activist has been languishing in police holding cells for the past five days for allegedly opposing a sentence passed by a Matobo Chief in his court on Saturday.
Chief Masuku whose area includes the sacred Njelele shrine on Saturday reportedly banished a woman who appeared in his traditional court facing charges of witchcraft.
"Passing his sentence, the chief banished the woman from his area and ordered her to pack her belongings," said a witness.
However, Bulawayo Agenda information officer, Anele Dube opposed the chief's decision arguing that he had no hard evidence to prove the witchcraft allegations.
"Traditionally, after passing a sentence, the chief allows members of the public to review his sentence. Dube then argued that there was no hard evidence to convict the woman," said the witness.
"This did not go down well with the chief who ordered that Dube be taken to Matobo police station for defying his judgement. Dube has been in the holding cells ever since," said the witness.
Matabeland South police spokesperson declined to comment on the matter.
