A shortage of cane  spirits (alcohol) is looming in Zimbabwe as the Brewing and Distilling Industry Workers Union have resolved to go on strike to press for salary hike.

The union issued a statement on Thursday saying they have reached a deadlock with their employers who are only prepared to top up their pay by only $14.00 instead of $269.00 they are demanding.

"The Brewing and Distilling Industry Workers Union at its Congress of the National Council held on the 14th April 2012 made numerous resolutions and one such resolution is to embark on a collective job action to force employers to agree on a fair increment "Currently employer is paying a total of $281.00 to which it says can be only increase to $295.00 thus showing a $14.00 increment for a period of 12 months (January 2012 to 31st December 2012)," reads a statement.

The union says workers are demanding to be paid $550.00.

"The parties could not agree and a likelihood of reaching an agreement is nil, therefore the action," the statement added.

Spirits such as Chateau, Ahoy, Inzimbe, Skippers, Breakers are popular with most drinkers.
