Zanu-PF national chairman Simon Khaya Moyo and President of the chiefs council Fortune Charumbira has snubbed a meeting by traditional chiefs to discuss the invasion of the Njelele shrine by 600 Zanla war veterans two months ago.

The meeting which was held in Esigodini on Monday however saw the flaring of tempers with chiefs accusing Zanu-PF of sanctioning the illegal visit to Njelele by the war veterans.

The chiefs had invited Charumbira, Moyo and war veterans chairman Jabulani Sibanda to discuss the thorny issue but only Sibanda turned up with Charumbira sending his deputy Chief Mtshana Khumalo.

The closed door meeting lasted for hours with chiefs reportedly registering their displeasure at Zanu PF whom they accused of sending the war veterans to the rain making shrine to perform "illegal" cleansing rituals.

After the meeting, Sibanda maintained that the visit to Njelele were illegal saying, "even during the days of the liberation struggle, President Robert Mugabe and the late Vice President Joshua Nkomo recognised the importance of the shrine that no one would just go there and perform rituals."

The meeting was held at the backdrop of reports that the Zipra Veterans Trust had engaged lawyers to bar the Zanla veterans from the shrine.
