PROMINENT Bulawayo writer of letters to the editor in the Chronicle Aureen 'O' Jays" Newa has died.
Newa died after a short illness at Mpilo Central Hospital on Monday and was buried at West Park Cemetery yesterday.
He was 44.
Hundreds of mourners gathered at the cemetery to bid farewell to a man whose life touched many in the city.
A friend of O'Jays, as he was affectionately known, who spoke on condition of anonymity said speaker after speaker described Newa as a man of the people who was humble and had the people at heart.
He also said Newa's death had left the family in grief as he was a pillar of strength.
"O'Jays had been ill for about a month but he had given us hope that he was getting well. During that time, he was in and out of hospital and a week before he died, he was admitted to Mpilo Central Hospital.
"We are in a lot of pain as friends and family because we have lost a pillar of strength, someone we could rely on during challenging times," said the friend.
Newa was born in Bulawayo in 1968 and grew up in Mzilikazi. He is survived by three daughters and a son.
