A female police sergeant based in Bulawayo died after she was run over by a car she was trying to wave down on Sunday afternoon.

The traffic police officer was part of a team of speed trap traffic officers checking whether motorists were driving in regulated speed.

"A white woman was driving along a road in Ilanda and the machine the police use to gauge speed indicated that she was over-speeding," said a witness.

"As she drew closer to the police, the female sergeant jumped into the road waving the vehicle to stop but the white woman failed to brake on time and knocked down the police officer."

The female officer suffered a broken leg and two fractured arms as well as serious head injuries.

She died on the spot the white woman was arrested.

Bulawayo provincial police spokesperson Inspector Mandlenkosi Moyo confirmed the incident.

"We are investigating a case where a female police officer was knocked down by a motorist in Ilanda," he said.
