A Bulawayo man who allegedly posed as a worker of Blanket Gold Mine in Gwanda and operated a racket selling fake gold has been arrested. Allen Moyo alias Chimombe from Lobengula, Bulawayo, was arrested last week while trying to sell 351,8 grammes of fake gold.
Border Control and Minerals Unit spokesperson, Detective Inspector Shelter Rufu, confirmed the arrest.
Detective Insp Rufu said police received a tip that Moyo was selling gold and luring prospective buyers by misrepresenting that he worked for Blanket Gold Mine.
Detectives from the Border Control and Minerals Unit set a trap for Moyo who posed as buyers and requested for the product from Moyo who claimed he had 351,8 grammes of gold.
"He was subsequently arrested with some pieces of fake gold nuggets, which he was claiming were genuine gold. He was taken to Gwanda Police Station," Det Insp Rufu said.
She said the nuggets were examined at Banket Gold Mine where it was established that they were fake.
Moyo is suspected to have duped several people using the same method.
Detective Insp Rufu said he would appear in court as soon as investigations are completed.
