TWO men from Bulawayo's Selborne Park suburb allegedly fatally assaulted a man whom they suspected to be a thief before dragging the body and dumping it on the street.

Police confirmed the incident, which occurred on Sunday at about 11pm and said they had picked up two people for questioning over the alleged murder.

Witnesses said the man's body was found naked along Inkonkoni Street in the suburb.

Witnesses said one Thabani Mangisi who lives at the house where the incident occurred, ganged up with another man, Busani Ncube, after his wife had phoned him, informing him that there was an intruder at the house.

"The suspected thief entered the house where Mangisi's wife was sleeping prompting her to phone her husband who had gone out for a beer drink with friends.

"Mangisi then teamed up with his friend and rushed home where they attacked the suspected thief, resulting in his death," said a resident who spoke on condition of anonymity.

When Chronicle visited the suburb yesterday, police had collected the body and Mangisi who was in handcuffs was being taken around for indications.

His wife was reported to have been picked by the police for questioning.

Mangisi and his accomplice allegedly assaulted the now deceased man using iron bars and logs. They also allegedly bashed him against the wall before dragging him to the street.

They are said to have later tried to resuscitate the man and when they failed, they reportedly attempted to wash away blood stains around the yard to conceal evidence.

However, there were bloodstains on the walls in some of the rooms in the house.

Police spokesperson for Bulawayo Inspector Mandlenkosi Moyo said the two suspects were assisting with investigations.

"We are investigating a suspected murder case that occurred in Selborne Park. The man's body was found with deep cuts on the head and bruises on the knees. We followed up the case and two people are now assisting us with investigations," said Insp Moyo.

Residents who had gathered said they were shocked to see a naked body lying in a pool of blood in the morning.

"I woke up in the morning and found a dead body near my house. The body had been stripped naked and the clothes were a few metres from my house," said another resident.

He said a woman from the suburb covered the naked body with a blanket as they waited for the arrival of the police.

"There were marks on the ground which showed that the man died while he was wrestling with someone," he said.
