Movement for Democratic Change leader Morgan Tsvangirai on Wednesday reportedly summoned his deputy Thokozani Khupe over the defection of 84 party faithful from the latter's Makokoba constituency in Bulawayo.

Although Khupe confirmed meeting Tsvangirai over the matter, she, however, declined to disclose what they had discussed.

"I am not in a position to divulge any details," was all Khupe said.

Khupe and MDC-T Bulawayo provincial chairperson Gorden Moyo have, however, disowned the defectors and described them as "impostors".

But party sources said Tsvangirai summoned Khupe for an urgent meeting in Harare following media reports that 84 party members had defected to the Ncube-led MDC over the weekend.

The sources said Tsvangirai appeared shaken by the development and indicated that he would meet the defectors in Bulawayo today in an effort to lure them back into the MDC-T.

MDC Bulawayo spokesperson Edwin Ndlovu insisted the 84 former MDC-T members left in a huff after they fell out with the party leadership, in particular Khupe.

The defectors accused Khupe and a councillor in the area (name supplied) of treating them inhumanely.
