The planned inaugural Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo Memorial Lecture set for Friday in Bulawayo is now in doubt with reports that police are contemplating blocked it.

National University of Science and Technology (Nust), in collaboration with the Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo Foundation have been planning the lecture.

Former Industry and Trade minister Nkosana Moyo is set to be the guest of honour.

However, a highly placed Nkomo family member told Bulawayo24 on Thursday that "elements within government and policy are plotting to call off the lecture"

"We got indications in the morning that some people are not comfortable with the lecture taking place and we fear it would be blocked".

The organiser of the lecture and director of the Joshua Nkomo Museum and Centre for Dialogue, Mmillili Tapela, this week said they hoped the lecture series would preserve the unity that the late nationalist fought for.

The lecture series was meant to coincide with the 13th anniversary of Nkomo's death.

The late nationalist died of prostate cancer on July 1, 1999.

Zapu youths have challenged government to declare July 1 a public holiday in honour of the late "Father Zimbabwe."
