The first ever Joshua Mqabuko Nkomo memorial lecture set for Friday at the National University of Science and Technology in Bulawayo has been shelved over unspecified reasons.

Former Minister Nkosana Moyo who had to skip the country and fax his resignation letter to President Robert Mugabe from South Africa in 2005 was supposed to hold the lecture in honour of the veteran nationalist.

However, insiders at the institution said the Joshua Nkomo Foundation which was collaborating with NUST to hold the lecture had asked the tertiary institution to put it on ice.

"The foundation communicated with us saying they wanted us to stop the lecture but the reasons were not clear," said a lecturer at the institution.

No comment could be obtained from NUST spokesperson Felix Moyo.

A number of projects involving honouring Joshua Nkomo have been put on ice a move that has been described as efforts by Mugabe to thwart his legacy.
