Hundreds of police officers residing at the Bulawayo's Western Commonage Police Station complex face eviction for failing to pay $90 each for what superiors say are development fees for the area.
The police officers were given up to Monday to pay the money or risk eviction from the premises.
A police officer who spoke on condition of anonymity said they failed to pay the money as it formed a large chunk of their salaries.
"The money is too much and worse of all we do not know what developments they want us to pay for. We pay school fees in installments and we do not have that kind of money to pay for development fees," said the police officer.
"If we are evicted, we will be left stranded because we do not have the money and as you know accommodation is so scarce. We have children attending school and if we are evicted, they will be exposed to the cold that would cause them so many diseases."
Bulawayo provincial spokesperson Mandlenkosi Moyo professed ignorance on the matter.
"We are yet to be briefed on the matter. What we know how ever is that the piping system at Western Commonage is bad," he said.
