The Zimbabwe Congress of Trade Unions (ZCTU), through the Zimbabwe Lawyers for Human Rights, on Monday obtained a High Court order allowing commemorations for International Women's Day (IWD) to proceed in Bulawayo. The police were made aware of the order which also granted ZCTU permission to march in the city.
Despite the High Court order, on Tuesday armed police stormed ZCTU Bulawayo offices telling them that more than 200 ZCTU activists had gathered that there will be no march.
The police have been heavy-handed in Harare and Gweru as well and threatened unspecified action if the ZCTU went ahead with the commemorations.
The Zimbabwe lawyers for Human Rights are also handling the matter and have said if the police maintain their stance, the ZCTU will make an urgent High Court application on Tuesday to allow the commemorations to go ahead.
