Mpopoma-Pelandaba MP Samuel Sandla Khumalo, 48, was originally detained on a public order charge after police broke up a fight in Pelandaba suburb.
A search of the MP's vehicle looking for a firearm resulted in police bumping into small quantities of marijuana.
They later searched his home and found more marijuana weighing 40,5 grammes wrapped in an old newspaper. The find has a street value of US$4,50.
Khumalo was not asked to plead when he appeared before a Bulawayo magistrate on Monday charged with "unlawful possession of a dangerous drug". The offence carries a maximum sentence of five years in jail.
Police say they are preparing a second public order charge after the MP was involved in skirmishes with commuter omnibus drivers in front of Ikwezi Tavern Bar in Pelandaba.
